Deep-diving Northern Bottlenose Whales in Skjálfandi Bay and Eyjafjörður

The northern bottlenose whales have made the headlines in Iceland for a big portion of this summer. First, because of several stranded individuals within a short period of time in July and then, shortly after that, they were sighted in Skjálfandi Bay during whale watching trips (see news from the 7th of August) and have been in the bay ever since.

Whale Research: 3 Recaptures

A rough evaluation of the 2008 photo identification data revealed: 2 minke whale recaptures and one humpback whale recapture, meaning individuals that have been documented in previous years.

Ice Climate Education Camp 2008 in Húsavík

The Ice Climate Education Camp 2008 (I.C.E) organized by Arved Fuchs, a German expedition leader, has now started to be held in Húsavík and the Whale Museum. (see news from the 28th of March). Students from all over the world took part in a competition to qualify for the I.C.E.

Since the beginning of the week, there have been reports about the sighting of a species that is out of the ordinary on whale watching trips. Yesterday, it could be confirmed that the whales sighted are Northern bottlenose whales...

Re-capture of Humpback Whale after 20 Years

A Humpback whale individual that was sighted and documented in Icelandic waters (Denmark Strait) in 1982 by Tony Martin from the British Antarctic Survey had been re-captured by the whale museum research team in Skjálfandi Bay in 2001.

Adults: 1.250 ISK

Children (6-14 years): 500 ISK

Senior Citizens (from 65 years): 900 ISK

Groups (+10): Adults: 900 ISK, children: 400 ISK

2010 - A Year of Renovation at the Whale Museum

In the spring the entrance was moved to a restored area in the eastern part of the museum which now hosts the tourist information centre for Húsavík, together with the museum´s store.

Humpback whale from Skjálfandi Bay photographed off Africa

It is still quite early in the season but the museum’s researchers have already been out on the whale watching boats several times to collect data and take pictures of whales that have been sighted during the trips.
