Rare Visitors
Some rare and very special guests have visited Skjálfandi Bay for several weeks this summer: the mighty blue whales. It is 7 years ago, since the last blue whales have been spotted in the area and when a blue whale cow and her calf spent around 2 weeks in the Bay. This year, there has been the enormous amount of 8 – 10 individuals, staying in the area close to Flatey Island, which is with a little over 200m the deepest section of the Bay. The blue whales are usually spotted in the deep waters off the western coast and are not expected to occur in this rather shallow bay. This unusual visitation created the most amazing whale watching trips from Húsavík during that time.
