The First Recapture
The Whale Museum researchers have recognized their first photographic re-capture of a Humback whale, showing that a single animal visited us twice over a three-year period. It is assumed that individuals return to the same locations in following years, but now we have the proof!
While evaluating the pictures and adding them to the catalogue of Humpback whales, Mike Tetley recognized that one individual sighted in 2002 had been back again in 2005. This also shows the whale's remarkable ability to navigate their way to familiar feeding grounds after having travelled for thousands of kilometers.
