Whale Festival

On the 1st and 2nd of July, the Museum held its annual Whale Festival, which was filled with events organized by the Museum staff. On Friday, everyone was invited to help create a life-size (33 meters) model of a blue whale in the sand at the beach in Húsavík. A series of lectures on a variety of topics were hosted throughout the week-end. Ómar Ragnarsson, an Icelandic documentary filmmaker, and Árni Finnsson from the Nature Conservation Organization gave presentations on environmental issues, and the Museum staff introduced a series of lcetures on specific aspects of Cetacean life. Included in the festivities was a sand castle competition after a ceremonial procession to the beach with our own inflatible Keiko, the famous Orca. The local paper covered the events held during the Whale Festival.
