Blue Whales in the Bay

Once again, the Blue whales delight us with their presents in Skjáfandi Bay at just about the same time they did in the previous year. It's been more than a month since the first individuals were spotted and they have been seen quite frequently ever since. While Blue whales are known to occur in Icelandic waters, it is rather unusual to see them in the shallow waters of Skálfandi Bay, now the 2nd year in a row. Scientists are not certain on the population size of Blue whales in Icelandic waters. They remain on the IUCN Red List of Endangered Species, due to the high number of Blue whales being killed before a whaling ban in the 1960´s. We certainly consider ourselves lucky to have these supersized visitors enjoying the bay, and we hope to be able to share these waters in years to come.
