Poll on Whaling

 

According to the latest poll published in one of Iceland’s biggest newspapers called “Fréttablaðið” in June 2006, the majority of Icelanders seems to be against the resumption of commercial whaling. The poll asked “Do you want Iceland to resume commercial whaling?” with 45,5% answering yes and 54,5% answering no. The scientific whaling has continued throughout the summer with the announcement to take 10 more Minke whales in August, adding up to a total of 60 Minke whales this summer. The Icelandic Marine Research Institute confirmed that scientific whaling will continue and come to its end in 2007, after having examined another 40 Minke whales to fulfill the quota of 200 whales announced at the IWC. The research results are yet to be published...

Humpback whale from Skjálfandi Bay photographed off Africa

It is still quite early in the season but the museum’s researchers have already been out on the whale watching boats several times to collect data and take pictures of whales that have been sighted during the trips.
