Support and Acknowledgement

On April 27, 2007, Iceland’s Minister of Education, Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, paid a visited to the Whale Museum and brought a great gift with her: financial support of the Museum for the next three years, 2007-2009.

In the same week, the Whale Museum received additional support from the bank Glitnir (former Islandsbanki), which will support the museum financially for the next three years.

With the contract from the educational ministry comes the official acknowledgement of the Whale Museum as an educational institution, not only for tourists, but also for the Icelandic public:

Considering that … Teachers from schools in the area have been utilizing our facilities for educational purposes in the past years; students, lecturers and professors of the University in Akureyri have been joining lectures on the whale museums research that is conducted in cooperation with the University of Bangor in Wales; the museum provides data, facilities and equipment for students of the University of Bangor, Wales, to conduct their masters thesis; there is data exchange and cooperation with the nature and academic center of Húsavík …. the acknowledgement certainly is justified.

Last year, the amount of visitors reached a total of over 20.000 people for the first time. With all this support, interest and acknowledgement, the Húsavík Whale Museum surely looks into a bright future, and the staff will be able to continue on with its successful work for the years to come.

Sincere thanks is given to all of them!
