Hvalaskóla / Whale-School
A new educational project is on its way. Established and conducted by Húsavík resident Þórhildur Jónsdóttir, the Whale-School is a 3-day workshop for school children and includes whale and ocean related activities. The former whale watching guide knows the lack of knowledge and interest on whales, trying to increase awareness by starting with the future: the children.
The workshop started on the 14th of May with a visit to the Museum. The group of 45 children in 5th grade received a lecture on whales and was provided with a Questionnaire that had to be completed during the 2 hour long visit. While trying to find the answers to the 25 questions, the pupils had to go through the entire exhibition and read carefully. The Project leader and the Museum staff were glad to see the enjoyment and growing ambition to answer all the questions in time. The promised award for 3 of the students that answered the questions correctly certainly helped to increase the interest. Being the trial of this event, we all agreed upon its success and continuation.
