No Whale Meat Market to support Commercial Whaling
In August 2007, the Icelandic fisheries minister announced that commercial whaling quotas would not be renewed for the following year because there is no whale meat market. The meat of the 7 Fin whales caught last year has yet to be sold... Since the start of the resumption of commercial whaling, the pro-whaling community claimed that there is a demand for whale meat in Japan, especially for the Fin whale meat. The Minister said that he is not going to issue any new permits unless it is secured that there is a demand for the product. After being immediately criticized by the pro-whaling community, he revised his statement the day after, issuing permits for a limited catch of Minke whales for the domestic market.
