International Workshop on Marine & Nature-based Tourism
An international workshop about marine & nature based tourism with people attending from Iceland, Canada, New Zealand and Germany was held on the 5th and 6th of May in Húsavík and the Mývatn-area. The workshop was organised by the Regional Employment-Development Agency and aggregated local stakeholders with international advisors to evolve future projects in North-eastern Iceland.
The main topic of the 1st day was marine based tourism and parts of the workshop were held in the Whale Museum. The participants learned about whales and dolphins in the area, obtained information about the local whale watching activities, and the museum's role in nature based tourism in Northern Iceland.
Further topics were the development of a strategy plan for North-eastern Iceland and its touristic potential, the organisation of tourism and whale watching in New Zealand and many other comparative case studies.
The second day was scheduled to be held in Mývatn-area with the main focus on bird watching, including a visit to the new bird centre that is planned to be opened in July 2008, and a bird watching trip.
All participants showed great interest in the workshop and contributed with lots of ideas for new projects and how to develop nature based tourism sustainably.
