Hvalaskóli / Whale School 19th - 21st of May 2008

What started as a pilot project last year is about to become a permanent establishment: the "Hvalaskóla" or Whale School, which is a three day workshop for school children to learn about the whales and the ocean environment. Several regional schools participated, with the children spending one day in the whale museum, learning and answering questions, and the next day on a whale watching boat, where they had to spot the whales and determine the species. On the 3rd all the information was summarised to answer the overall question: what are the reasons for the whales to come here during the summer time? This time, the 37 participants were in the 5th grade. It is planned, however, to extend the workshop and make it suitable for a broader age group.
