Female Minke Whale with Calf

A little sensation was spotted in Skjálfandi Bay on the 28th of May: A female minke whale accompanied by her calf. It was the first time, since whale watching was established, that this rather rare sight could be observed in Skjálfandi Bay during one of the trips. The calf appeared playful and interested in the boat but its mother made sure that it kept a save distance, by staying between her calf and the boat.

The presence of a calf gave the museum researchers the unusual opportunity to determine the gender of the animal sighted undoubtedly. The only non-invasive way of determining the gender of cetaceans is to catch a look of the animal's underside, which is only possible if the whale breaches or rolls in the water, and that, depending on the species, barely happens. In case of a female, the urogential openings or genital slits are embraced by a mammary slit on each side.
