Blue - Fin Whale Hybrid?

Tourists, guides and captains have been in doubt about a particular individual, which seems to have features of a blue whale such as the colouration pattern of the body, but also of a fin whale like the dorsal fin shape and the general darker colouration of the body. The Museum's researchers have yet to spot this animal that has caused quite a bit of confusion in the past few days.

Blue and fin whales are known to crossbreed in rare occasions. To date, there are about 10 individuals that have been determined to be hybrids worldwide, and amazingly, most of them were found in Icelandic waters. Male hybrids are considered to be infertile but there is one known case of a pregnant female hybrid with an unborn (blue whale) young.

The pictures show a fin whale with its typical prominent dorsal fin and the blue whales with the typical body coloration and the prominent blow.
