A Summer of Changes
The museum is experiencing some major changes this summer. Its founder and manager, Ásbjörn Björgvinsson, has left to take on a new position as manager of the Tourist Association North Iceland in Akureyri. Ásbjörn has been the manager of the Húsavík Whale Museum for about 11 years and felt that it was time to move on. Over the years, he has worked to promote and boost tourism in the region and Iceland as a whole. Together with the whale watching companies of Iceland, he was influential quite early in the whaling debate, and time has shown that whales are increasingly more valuable alive to the tourist industry than they could ever be dead to the whaling industry.
We would like to thank Ásbjörn for establishing a museum that Húsavík and Iceland can be very pleased with and wish him the best for his new career.
The Museum will be directed by Elke Wald until the manager's position has been filled.
