Annual Meeting of the International Whaling Commission
The annual meeting of the International Whaling Commission (IWC) was held in Santiago de Chile from the 23rd to 27th of June, with the participation of 81 Nations.
Denmark's proposal to increase the indigenous whaling quota by 10 humpback whales in Greenland was rejected, in despite of hard lobbyism and Denmark's yes vote under a legal exemption.
Another success of the IWC meeting was the change of the voting rights for new IWC members, which now have to wait a 30-day period until given the right to vote. "This new approach of thirty days will definitely prevent some of the vote buying aspects, allowing countries to join up and surprises at the meeting," said Rob Nicoll.
The annual meeting ended without achieving more whale conservation attempts or resolving the deep rifts that divide the member governments into pro-whaling and pro-conservation fractions.
