Orca Pod Kills Minke Whale in Skjálfandi Bay

On the 23rd of July, a group or pod of about 15 Orcas, including calves, had come into the bay and for the first time, they could be observed attacking and killing a Minke whale in Skjálfandi Bay. The well co-ordinated hunt lasted about 30 minutes and the  passengers of two whale watching boats were able to witness this spectacular incident.

Orcas are known to prey on a wide range of animals such as fish, seabirds and marine mammals. Based on the resources they feed on, they are subdivided into resident Orcas, which stay in the same region year round and mainly feed on fish and the transient Orcas, which travel long distances in the search of marine mammals such as seals or other whale species.

Due to Photo ID pictures taken during the trip, the Orca pod observed can undoubtedly be identified and categorised as transient Orcas.
