Unusual Sighting

Since the beginning of the week, there have been reports about the sighting of a species that is out of the ordinary on whale watching trips. Yesterday, it could be confirmed that the whales sighted are Northern bottlenose whales, a species that tends to stay in deeper waters and is rarely seen close to shore. Some whale watchers got very lucky to see them breaching and where able to take these amazing pictures, which they thankfully made available to us.

In the past few weeks, there have been reports about Northern bottlenose whales that had beached themselves in the area. And even though the species is one of the ones that strand more often than others, it is rather unusual to find 5 animals stranded in different locations within a short period of time during the summer months. The causes of death were not obvious.
