Stranded Fin Whale successfully moved to Húsavík

The team consisting of the Museum's Curator, 3 Museum Volunteers, and a helper from the Search and Rescue Team in Vík had worked all Sunday to extract the bones from the decomposing body, before they were loaded on a truck. The goal was to keep the load as light as possible, since the location of the carcass was on a 2 km long sandy beach.   
After a 10 hour drive half way around Iceland, the bones were brought to a designated site out of town, where they will be staying for another 1-2 years, until the decomposing process is complete. In order to clean them entirely and drain all the fat out of the bones, they will be soaked in hot water for several months. Then they are ready to be assembled and displayed. Still some ways to go...

Humpback whale from Skjálfandi Bay photographed off Africa

It is still quite early in the season but the museum’s researchers have already been out on the whale watching boats several times to collect data and take pictures of whales that have been sighted during the trips.
