Volunteer Program

volunteersSince 1997, we have had a number of volunteers from various countries working at the Museum during the summer season.

Main Tasks of Voulunteers are:

 Museum guidings, working at the reception (information, ticket and souvenir sales), lectures and presentations, participation in the whale research project, assistance in improving the exhibition, and museum maintenance.

Highly Valuable Contribution 

Work and contribution of the volunteers has been indispensable and is highly appreciated. Volunteering at the museum means to support its continuation.

  • interested in whales and want to learn more about them 
  • 21 years and older
  • available for at least 2 months 
  • fluent in English
  • appreciating teamwork
  • flexible and open-minded

    Applying as a Volunteer 

    The application should include a cover letter with information on time and duration of availability and your CV. Application deadline is the end of February each year.
    Positions are available from the beginning of May until the end of September, with the latest possible start on the 1st of June.

    Entrance Fees for 2011

    Entrance Fees 2011:

    Adults: 1.250 ISK

    Children (6-14 years): 500 ISK

    Senior Citizens (from 65 years): 900 ISK

    Groups (+10): Adults: 900 ISK, children: 400 ISK

    2010 - A Year of Renovation at the Whale Museum

    In the spring the entrance was moved to a restored area in the eastern part of the museum which now hosts the tourist information centre for Húsavík, together with the museum´s store.

    Humpback whale from Skjálfandi Bay photographed off Africa

    It is still quite early in the season but the museum’s researchers have already been out on the whale watching boats several times to collect data and take pictures of whales that have been sighted during the trips.
